The fight against polio

It is the biggest project Rotary has ever tackled in its 118-year history: The eradication of polio. Polio, also known as infantile paralysis, most commonly affects children under the age of five. Only the symptoms can be treated, not the disease itself. The most effective protection is therefore preventive vaccination.

Together with strong partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the children's relief organization UNICEF, Rotary International has almost achieved its goal. In the last 35 years, the spread of polio has been reduced from 125 countries to two thanks to large-scale vaccination campaigns. Today, only the populations of Afghanistan and Pakistan are still acutely threatened by polio viruses. Within the next few years, the chain of transmission worldwide is to be interrupted once and for all.
